About Us

The Pancake Underground was first opened as a food cart in Portland, Oregon in 2017 by two Virginia natives who found each other on the west coast and bonded over their love of creative breakfasts. What started as an off-hand joke about a sweet and savory pancake food cart between Christopher Kemp and Shenan Hahn when they first met each other quickly grew into a shared dream: to offer innovative, affordable comfort food and a welcoming community space.

After a successful run on the west coast, Christopher and Shenan decided to get back to their roots and re-open The Pancake Underground as a brick and mortar restaurant in their native Shenandoah Valley, where the abundance of farms and orchards makes it that much easier to source ingredients locally and produce food that is truly community-oriented.

We are now accepting reservations!
A certain number of tables in the dining room are available for reservation each day. The bar area and patio are not reservable, but are available for walk-ins. To make a reservation, please visit our reservations page. And note: if the booking page says we are all booked up, never fear! There are likely still tables available for walk-ins.

A couple things to note…
We want to make The Pancake Underground dining experience the best it can possibly be for everyone – and that includes providing delicious food, made from scratch, and cooked to order (good food takes time and care!). This involves working within the capabilities of our kitchen, space, and menu. In order to make this possible, we have a couple policies for dine-in and takeout:

Reservations must be made at least 12 hours in advance. Additionally, we will only hold your table for 15 minutes past your reservation time. After this, if your party is not present, we cannot guarantee your table will be available. We highly recommend reservations for larger parties.

Take out is not available on weekends. Saturday and Sunday are dine-in only, and takeout is not available then due to the volume of dine-in customers. You can dine in any day though!

Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome on our patio, which is open seasonally (closed in the winter months). The indoor dining space is humans-only, with the exception of service dogs.

An 18% service charge is added automatically for parties of 6 or more. Additional gratuity beyond this is not required.

No outside beverages please.

The rest is all gravy, baby! We hope to see you soon.

Local Providers

Quality food comes from quality ingredients. We truly believe this, and as a small business, we also believe in supporting other small businesses who provide a quality product. It is our goal at The Pancake Underground to source as many of our ingredients from local providers as possible, in order to produce food that showcases the bounty of the Shenandoah Valley and strengthens our community of growers, harvesters, artisans, and producers. We strive to be a community-oriented space in every sense, from the food on your plate to the art on the walls. From the valley, for the valley. As such, we’d like to thank our local providers:
